home-made bread & pickled beetroot

since deciding to stay put here at Inglewood, I have become more of a domestic goddess than ever before.. dutch husband has bought me a bread-maker as well as a coffee machine & I have bought bunches of organic beetroot from the Co-op in Katoomba..the bread-maker sits on the bench.. scaring me witless.. I had visions of baskets of home-made bread but I am in fear of taking that first step... the coffee machine? well, i must find some coffee and then I will have a try.. but my friends have been throwing words at me like, 'make sure you buy an espresso grind' ... 'beware burnt milk', 'make sure that you warm the cups !!' and worst of all 'do a barista course'... pickling beetroot is easier.. I can do it with my eyes shut..

OMG Robyn. Make the bread. Think of the reward - soft center, crisp warm crust, dripping in melting butter. Divine. I don't use mine enough. Think I'll do just that this weekend.

Re: the coffee machine - I throw whatever I have into the coffee basket. Coffee is delish every time. Stop listening to people (not me of course, LOL) and have FUN FUN FUN with your knew toys.

Dutch husband is a doll for getting you these goodies.

I got a coffee machine for Christmas and once I'd found out the right amount of coffee to put in for my tastes I'm a happy bunny.
Make the coffee and bread and feed the birds if it doesn't come out right and put the coffee grounds on the compost heap! And try again!!

I have discovered that I don't like bread-making machines. I prefer making bread by hand - it seems more earthy and kind of meditative and gets me in touch with my ancestors. I have a great bread recipe if you want it!

Pickled beetroot - my late Nan's specialty! How lovely it was, always in very thin slices which we'd have with cheese with lots of bite, and the freshest of bread. She also made the best sponge cakes, something I've never been able to accomplish. Yes, make the bread, sounds like fun!

Good luck with the bread machine and I so understand not being able to explain your faith. I sometimes wonder if I'm just being stingy because I don't even want to talk about it. Because words just don't do it.

I agree with everyone else!!

Just do it!!

We had a breadmaker but the paddles that knead the bread would never come out of the baked bread and always ended up ripping the bread so I got rid of it!!

Homemade and homegrown are always best. That is truly the sacred in ordinary. Yesterday I took some recently picked cabbage,cored it, cleaned it good,then put in a skillet with some bacon and stir fried it together. Tell me how you pickle beetroot.
